One of the best approaches that is out there is called SubSonic. By using this approach, the entire database gets accessed as a fully object oriented driven system.
Currently, with the standard approach to programming, most complex web applications consist of around 8,000 files! However, with this new initiative, an entire project would consist of around 200 files, less than 100 pages. Which is REALLY cool!

Most of our programming protocols follow utilizing object oriented programming to the max, however we usually advise our clients to use this form of programming mostly on a needs-basis and when the standard SQL query fails or lacks proper data fetching.
With this approach, fixing any component would be easily executed. The system is very advanced, and can be moved to different servers which utilize different technologies.
The beauty of using SubSonic is that say for ex: Microsoft comes out with a new release of a new technology that you want implemented in your application, well guess what? SubSonic supports upgrading certain tools to newly Microsoft released technologies!
